55TH EDITION CHAPMAN: PILOTING SEAMANSHIP AND SMALL BOAT HANDLING Reviews
I don't know how you can make a more comprehensive book about boating.
First, I highly recommend at least the basic boating class, many times offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. With or without that education, this book should be studied by anyone operating or even a regular passenger on a vessel.
I love boating on the Chesapeake Bay and other waters... exploring and as we say 'gunkholing" in out of the way spots. This is almost always done in rented trawlers and other available craft. Never never never would I leave shore without this reference tool in my bag.
The basic rules of navigation.
Dear Skipper: Whether a novice or practiced boater, Chapman's Piloting Seamanship and Boat Handling book is an essential part of your marine safety education. It doesn't matter where you do your boating; ocean, intracoastal, lakes or rivers, or the size or type (sail or power) of your vessel. And don't make the mistake of thinking that a basic boating course is adequate training. Chapman's provides in-depth and meaningful training which can keep you and your family safe and able to enjoy your time on the water. It teaches you how to adequately equip your boat, boat handling during inclement weather (absolutely crucial), piloting (getting from point A to point B) anchoring, docking and all the other essentials which should be learned and trained on water. Don't keep Chapman's in your boat, keep it on your coffee table by the television where you can see it and access it easily and often. The seamanship book is sort of like an emergency preparedness plan for your boat. As an emergency responder you must study and understand and be able to implement the plan BEFORE an emergency or disaster strikes! Read this book and practice on water. The result will be a confident, alert and happy skipper.
So much amazing nautical information. An absolute must for any mariner navigating a lake to the seven seas.
My husband ordered this book for his brother who recently purchased a boat. Being a Jr. Navigator in the Power Squadron, he knows how important it is to operate a boat responsibly. He still references his original Chapmans after many years of boating. My husband wanted his brother to have a new edition, so I used my 1 click to order the book. Amazon mailed it directly to my brother in law in Alabama and it took less than a week.
For a class that I was enrolled for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, I needed to get a copy of the "Chapman" manual.
